Depository, Restoration and Exhibition Centre at Museum capmus of Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts
reconstruction of a historic building

The Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts' Depository, Restoration and Exhibition Centre is a new building to expand the museum's storage facilities, restoration workshops and exhibition spaces.

The concept is based on the principle of open storage – visitors can look at works directly in the storage room and observe the restoration processes.

All the rooms and technologies meet the modern museum requirements and provide the necessary conditions for exhibiting the artworks. During the reconstruction of the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts' Main Building, the exhibits will be moved to the Depository, Restoration and Exhibition Centre until the restoration work in the museum is over.

Restoration is very much like medicine. Only instead of patients, we have ailing museum objects and works of art. But unlike people, the artworks are of many different types, such as paintings, manuscripts, tapestries and many others.

Each of them requires its own separate "clinic" with its own methods of "treatment", unlike the others. Separately there is a diagnostic block, equipped as well as a radiation diagnostics department of a state-of-the-art hospital. Use of explosive substances and highly toxic chemicals does not make the technologist's tasks any easier.

Along with that, the DREC is an open-type restoration where visitors can observe the restoration process. A contradiction occurs – to make the workshops as open and protected as possible. It was necessary to develop routes for visitors and protection systems – for the paintings against exposure to people, for the people against dangerous chemicals.
